Should you visit Capri Island?

We took a day trip to Capri Island from Sorrento. Here is our review.

What is Capri?

Capri is a beautiful island located in the Bay of Naples, Italy. It is known for its stunning scenery, luxurious hotels, and vibrant nightlife. This day trip takes you to the top attractions on the island, including the Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni Rocks, and the Villa San Michele.

How can I get to Capri?

The most common way to get to Capri is to take a ferry. There are ferries that run from Naples, Sorrento, and Amalfi to Capri. The ferries take about 30 minutes to an hour to reach Capri. You can also take a hydrofoil or helicopter.

How do I get around Capri?

The town square is on top of a cliff so the easiest way to get there is by taking a Funicular. Tickets are about 2.20 euro per person each way. There is a ticket office right off the ferry terminal. Once you are at the top, there is a public bathroom (0.50 euro) and a map of the island.

Things to do

  • Faraglioni Rocks - The Faraglioni Rocks are three iconic limestone stacks that rise out of the sea.  There is a paved trail to follow to get to an overlook of Faraglioni Rocks.

  • Villa San Michele - The Villa San Michele is a beautiful villa with stunning gardens and panoramic views of the coast. The villa was once owned by a Swedish doctor, Axel Munthe, who used it as a retreat.

  • Explore the town of Capri - The town of Capri is a charming town with narrow streets, shops, and restaurants. The town is a great place to wander around and to enjoy the atmosphere.

  • Hike to the top of Monte Solaro - Monte Solaro is the highest point on Capri Island. The hike to the top is challenging, but the views from the top are worth it.

  • Visit the Blue Grotto - The Blue Grotto is a natural cave that is only accessible by boat. So you must buy a boat ticket.  You can buy it at the pier in Marina Grande, but the line could be long.  You can also buy the boat ticket online or through a tour company.  The cave is known for its bright blue waters and its stunning views of the surrounding area.

What We Liked

  • The town was fairly easy to walk around once I was off the funicular.

  • It was convenient to have a public bathroom available right by the funicular at the town square.

  • Most of the pathways were paved for stroller access.

  • Beautiful views of the Bay of Naples

What We Disliked

  • The ferry on the way from Sorrento to Capri took about 30 minutes and it was very rocky. Make sure you prepare yourself with motion sickness remedies if you are prone to motion sickness.

  • The alleyway can be very tight and tough to fit stroller through at times.

  • It can get very busy around the town square with lots of people. Oftentimes a lot of people just stood as they were trying to figure out where to go which added to the congestion.

  • Be sure to take an umbrella. Capri can frequently have passing rain clouds.

Verdict?

  • Comfort - 7

  • Convenience - 8

  • Value for the money - 9

  • Luxury - 7

On the scale of 1 - 10, We give this one: 7.8 (Probably worth it for most people.)
